Bridge Design Review

 

In the field of prestressed concrete (PC) bridges, I have performed the independent design review of 2 incrementally launched bridges, 4 cast-in-place balanced cantilever bridges, 2 precast segmental balanced cantilever bridges, and 9 simply-supported precast segmental spans. In the field of steel-composite bridges, I have performed the independent design review of an 850m cable-stayed bridge with four planes of stay cables. A great number of design reviews were also performed on the work delivered by other design team units within bridge design assignments for design-bid-build (DBB) and design-build (D/B) projects.

  • HNTB (2009-2010). Port Mann Bridge, Vancouver BC, Canada. The 850m cable-stayed span over the Fraser River comprises 4 planes of stay-cables and two adjacent 34m-wide steel-composite decks connected by pinned struts. The precast segmental approaches include 18 balanced cantilever spans and 42 simple spans. Owner: Ministry of Transportation of British Columbia. Procurement method: D/B. As the lead design review engineer, my duties included NLTH dynamic analysis of main span and approaches in the presence of seismic I/D systems, NLTH dynamic analysis of earthquake-induced soil liquefaction and lateral spreading, dynamic analysis of wind loads from wind-tunnel testing, time-dependent staged construction analysis of main span and approaches, and solid finite-element modeling of stay-cable anchor boxes, structural nodes of the steel-composite deck grillage, and the entire pylon head.
  • Egnatia Odos (2003-2006). Arachthos Bridge, Ioannina, Greece. This project included two adjacent 1036m PC bridges featuring six 143m balanced cantilever spans, two 91m end spans, and 80m-tall piers erected within the 56m-deep Stenos Dam reservoir. Owner: Egnatia Odos. Procurement method: DBB. As scientist in charge of a JV with Sintecna and the engineer-of-record of the design review, duties included full independent design review according to DIN Norms and Greek Standards. Design validation required site-specific seismic-hazard assessment, NLTH dynamic analysis of transverse deck pounding and different seismic I/D systems, dynamic analysis of the bridge response to earthquake-induced seiches in the Stenos Dam reservoir and tsunami-like effects at the basin boundaries, analysis of time-dependent stress redistribution of staged construction, checking of drawings and bar-bending schedules, constructability review, and technical assistance.
  • Egnatia Odos (2001-2003). Nestos Bridge, Xanthi, Greece. These two adjacent 930m PC bridges included 205m and 475m approaches built by incremental launching from the opposite abutments, and a central balanced cantilever span cast in-place with form travelers. Owner: Egnatia Odos. Procurement method: DBB. As scientist in charge of a JV with Sintecna and the engineer-of-record of the design review, duties included full independent design review according to DIN Norms and Greek Standards. Tasks included site-specific seismic-hazard assessment, NLTH dynamic analysis of multiple seismic I/D systems, staged-construction analysis of incremental launching and balanced cantilever construction, analysis of time-dependent stress redistribution, constructability review, and technical assistance.
  • Egnatia Odos (2000-2002). Arachthos Bridge, Ioannina, Greece. This 980m PC bridge designed by Christian Menn included 107m spans and 79m-tall V-shaped piers to be erected within the Stenos Dam reservoir. The 27m-wide deck was designed for casting a central box core as balanced cantilevers and widening the side wings segmentally with forming carriages. Owner: Egnatia Odos. Procurement method: DBB. As scientist in charge of a JV with Sintecna and the engineer-of-record of the design review, my duties included full independent design review according to DIN Norms and Greek Standards. Tasks included site-specific seismic-hazard assessment, Non-Linear Time History (NLTH) dynamic analysis of different seismic Isolation/Dissipation (I/D) systems, analysis of time-dependent stress redistribution of staged construction, analysis of shear-lag and stability of slender frame piers, constructability review, and technical assistance.
  • Egnatia Odos (1999-2001). Greveniotikos Bridge, Grevena, Greece. Two adjacent 920m PC bridges cast in-place on 100m spans by balanced cantilever construction with form travelers. Owner: Egnatia Odos. Procurement method: DBB. As scientist in charge of a JV with Sintecna and the engineer-of-record of the design review, my duties included full independent design review according to DIN Norms and Greek Standards. Tasks included nonlinear pushover analysis of plastic collapse mechanisms, analysis of the time-dependent stress redistribution of staged construction, constructability review, and checking of drawings and bar-bending schedules. A supplementary assignment included design review and load testing supervision of viscous dampers.
